Emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognise and manage one's own and others' emotions, and it influences life achievements even more than the cognitive intelligence quotient.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognise one’s own and other people’s feelings and the ability to manage emotions directed both towards oneself and towards others. These general factors of emotional intelligence are often accompanied by traits such as self-image, a balance between introverted and extraverted orientation, intellectual independence, a balance between seriousness and spontaneity, an emotional orientation towards leadership and followership, the capacity to enjoy one’s work and the ability to defend against negative emotions. This list could be extended, but the characteristics named here represent the main components of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence partly overlaps with social intelligence, which enables successful relationships with other people.

In mentally healthy individuals, emotions and the intellect combine to form emotional intelligence. Mood does not make a person more intelligent, but it can influence the way they think. When a person correctly understands their own emotions, accurately interprets the emotions of others and uses this information to improve their thinking and their relationships with others, in such situations that person becomes more intelligent in terms of their reasoning and behaviour.

Emotional intelligence describes abilities that differ from intellectual (cognitive) intelligence but are complementary to it. Many people who possess academic knowledge alongside insufficiently developed emotional intelligence often work for people whose cognitive intelligence quotient (IQ) is lower than their own, but who possess skills based on higher levels of emotional and social intelligence.

Psychologists agree that a high cognitive intelligence quotient, IQ, is not in itself sufficient to achieve happiness and success in life. According to their findings, IQ accounts for roughly 10 % to 25 % of the influence, while emotional intelligence (EQ) influences life achievements by 75 % and more. People with well-developed emotional intelligence achieve better results in the working environment, are more self-confident and are better leaders. Emotional intelligence is an important part of the human psyche and can improve productivity and personal development.
